Small Group Ministry
There are currently three Small Group Ministries
at St. John Church. Each group consists of 8 — 10 people, some of whom are
from outside the church. The groups meet independently and do not necessarily
follow the same format. Two of the groups came out of the Alpha Program.
The purpose of a Small Group is to meet on a regular basis and provide
love and care for the other members within the group. Each group has a leader
who prepares a discussion topic for each meeting. It is usually related to
Scripture; but not necessarily so.
A typical meeting starts at 7:30 pm. The first 15 minutes is sort of a catch up
group conversation on what has been happening in their lives since they last met.
At 7:45 pm the topic for the evening is introduced by the leader. This could,
for example, be the Scripture Reading for next Sunday's church Service. Then for
an hour open discussion takes place. Often the group will quickly go off topic
and have an informal discussion on a wide range of topics.
At 8:45 pm each person within the group is invited to say a prayer; this
might be for the health of a close friend or a general prayer topic. A person
can simply pass if not prepared to pray at any particular meeting. All
conversations throughout the Small Group meeting, including prayer,
are treated as confidential, and stay within the confines of the group.
At the conclusion; the group leader says a final prayer, and all stand and say
the Grace, and everyone leaves by 9:00 pm.
The Small Groups usually meet within each other's homes; the host for
the evening provides tea, coffee, and light refreshment.
The oldest of the Small Groups has been in existence for eight years,
meeting every second Tuesday evening; breaking for summer months, and a few
other occasions.
