The Worship Committee
In addition to meeting twice a year (prior to Advent/Christmas and
Lent/Easter), with people representing the ministries of
Lay Assistants, Altar Guild,
Choir/Music, Sidespersons and Greeters, and Readers,
a smaller version of this committee meets monthly with the Rector.
This smaller committee consists of Trisha Daniell, Ken Norton and Carol Smith.
The purpose of this smaller group is to review the worship services. The intent
is not only to look ahead and plan the large seasonal services, and
to evaluate these services, but also to find new ways of improving how the
Sunday Liturgy is offered both in the traditional Book of Common Prayer
services and the contemporary services using
The Book of Alternative Services.
In the past year this committee has discussed such concerns as:
- Reading the Scriptures (how Scripture is introduced and proclaimed);
- the Prayers of the People;
- serving at the altar;
- the use of silence during communion;
- hymns during communion;
- summer service times;
- the use of powerpoint for hymns;
- leaflet design;
- Christmas and Easter services.
This committee also followed up on a Parish Council motion that a new Aumbry
be designed and built for use of reserved sacrament. Arie van Dyck was
commissioned for this work, and his beautifully designed and crafted
aumbry, along with a sanctuary lamp was installed and blessed in the
north wall of the sanctuary on Thanksgiving weekend in 2007.
For the second summer in a row, the service times were not changed
from the rest of the year in 2007. While this is something the committee
constantly monitors, the majority of the feedback from our parishioners
is that the times should remain as they do throughout the year.
At present the only Sunday the service times change throughout the year
is on a month with five Sundays when we have an 8:00 am and 10:00 am service.
The canons indicate that after the Bishop, the Rector is the Chief Liturgical
Officer of the parish and decisions about worship are reserved solely for
him/her.
I am grateful for the feedback I have received from this committee in the
past year and look forward to working with them in the coming year.
